The Six Sigma Handbook, 4th edition, by T. Pyzdek and R. Keller. McGraw-Hill, New York, NY, 2014, 608 pp., $110.00, ISBN: 978-0-07-184053-8.

The fourth edition of The Six Sigma Handbook by Thomas Pyzdek and Paul Keller is a comprehensive reference book for both Six Sigma belts and managers. The first part of the book, "Six Sigma Implementation and Management," provides an excellent overview for managers who are thinking of implementing Six Sigma in their organization. The second part of the book, "Six Sigma Tools and Techniques," provides a high level review for Six Sigma belts who are actively working on improvement projects.

In the Preface, Keller states the fourth edition revisions address the challenges of implementing Six Sigma. Without familiarity of the previous editions, I cannot comment on the specific changes; however, I do believe the first part of the book adequately covers common pitfalls and remedies. In particular, Chapter 1 provides numerous guidelines for successful implementation based on the authors' personal experiences as well as a thorough literature review on Six Sigma and change management as a whole. In addition, Chapter 2 discusses the integration of Six Sigma into an organization's overall strategy. Here the authors provide a review of several strategic planning concepts including an in-depth description of constraint management principles.
